Description
This rare American silver cruet set was crafted by Boston-based silversmith Joseph Austin, circa 1760. Cruets started to be used for culinary purposes in the late 1600’s, typically for serving oil and vinegar. The cruet stand features a simple, yet elegant, frame, which sits on four shell feet, while a central finial displays a swan and hawk and other decorative features. Five finely detailed custom replacement cruets with stoppers are included in the set. The mark “J.Austin” in the cruet stand shows authenticity and quality craftsmanship. Winterthur has a very similar cruet set in their collection with original bottles.
