Description

This magnificent tankard was made by the famed Ephraim Brasher in New York circa 1770. Its provenance is traced to Peter Schermerhorn (1749-1826). He was a commander and owner of shipping vessels trading between New York and Charleston, SC. The South Street Seaport Museum now sits on his old property.  The tankard is baluster form with molded foot and stepped dome cover. It has a contemporary, boldly engraved PES in a rococo cartouche. Perforations (not a large cutout) were expertly filled in above the cartouche where a later spout was removed. Today it is not even noticeable. The Schermerhorn shield on the lid was added in the 19th century. The tankard stands tall and proud at 9 3/8 inches and looks wonderful. It weighs 38 Oz. It is marked on the bottom BRASHER N York. The tankard had a full 2 page spread when it appeared in the Jeffords sale estimated at $30,000-$50,000. It sold then, in 2004, for $19,200. Sold
