Description

This is a pretty rare form in early American silver. It is an ale pitcher. It stands 9 1/2 inches tall and weighs 32 Oz. 18 Dwt. On one side is engraved “In Remembrance of Joshua H Rathbone” On the other side it says “To Thomas S and Mary Slocum. A token of thanks 1834.” There was a Reverand Joshua H Rathbone who lived from 1695-1779 and was born on Block Island, Rhode Island. He had a grandson, also Joshua H Rathbone who lived in Providence, RI., who was born in 1801 and passed in 1834, making it likely that it was he who was being remembered. George Baker worked in Providence, Rhode Island from about 1825. The pitcher has a wonderful lid topped by a ball finial and is beautiful condition.  The Slocum family has Quaker roots going back to the 17th century in Nantucket.
