Description

Marvelous and rare pair of sugar nips by famed silversmith Daniel Henchman. These were made circa 1760 in Boston. The “WE/E” monogram is possibly for William Ellery who is known to have been a patron. They have no sign of repair and exhibit a lovely old patina. Henchman probably apprenticed with Jacob Hurd, whose daughter Elizabeth he married. The WE/E also could more probably be for William Ellery Sr. and his wife Elizabeth. William Sr. was a wealthy merchant and Lt. governor of Rhode Island. He died in 1764. William Jr. signed the Declaration of Independence and attended the Continental congress.
