This is a very special early piece of Boston silver. William Cowell, Sr. was born in 1682 in Boston and lived until 1736. According to Patricia Kane there are but 7 extant cups by him. There are many more porringers and tankards. The initials on the bottom represent the history of the piece and its various owners over the centuries. This was made circa 1710, in the South end of Boston on Newbury Street where he lived with his wife Elizabeth nee Kilby. Cowell was close friends with Samuel Sewall. The cup measures 3 3/8 inches in height to the top of the handle and weighs 3 Oz. 11 Dwt.
