Description
An American silver tankard by Benjamin Burt. Boston, Mass. circa 1770. Height 8 3/4 inches 30 oz. Burt was an accomplished silversmith as were his father and brothers. This stunning tankard shows his mastery of his work. According to reports he weighed 380 pounds…a very large man. He would sit and drink and talk politics in the secret back room of the Salutation tavern with Paul Revere and others. They were both staunch Whigs. Sam and John Adams were also frequently there as the place where the North Caucus would meet.
