Description

This is a gorgeous tankard, ex Pfaffenroth, from early Boston. The arms are for the Baldwin family in Connecticut. Vim vi repello….the latin, translates to “repulse force by force”. In 1938 Mr. Jeffords was offered this piece at $4,000. That was house money before the war. He ended up paying $2800, we think, and kept it until he finally sold it to Pfanffenroth. In the Jeffords silver sale, Sotheby’s January, 2004, it was estimated at $70,000-$90,000.We surmise that Mr. Pfaffenroth purchased it after the sale. The tankard has a molded baseband, flat-domed cover with a reeded border, fluted handle with elongated drop and a cherub head terminal. There may have been an earlier coat of arms polished off. There is just a trace barely visible if held at just the right angle. Still, this is a wonderful and important early Boston tankard and it is now being offered for only the second time in 83 years. It stands 7 7/8 inches tall and weighs 32 Oz.  It looks absolutely amazing. It is an important tankard and priced to sell.
