Joseph Richardson Jr. became the first assayer at the United States mint when he was appointed by George Washington in 1795. This ladle was made a few years earlier about 1790 in Philadelphia. The ladle weighs 6 oz. 8 Dwt. and measures 13 3/4 inches in length.
