Description

The silver dish cross was an item very popular in the last half of the 18th century. The center of this piece holds a burner and wick. The crossed arms centrally pivot, have adjustable legs, and dish supports. Silver dish crosses were used to keep entree dishes warm when serving. While many during the late 18th century were very plain, however this rare piece by Samuel Tingley of New York is decorated with scalloped edges, reeded accents, and trellis on the sliding dish supports. Engraved on one side are the initials “AUH.” Two of the legs are marked with Samuel Tingley’s initials “ST” in a conforming cartouche.

This piece has good clear hallmarks and has a superior level of craftsmanship, making it a rare and highly sought after piece. Since the dish cross was invented in Ireland and very popular in Europe, it is rare to find such a good quality piece that was created by a New York silversmith. This item is in excellent condition, with lustrous silver patina, tight cover, mild wear, and it stands perfectly on it’s own. Contact us today if you are interested in this piece from Lamb Silver.
