Description

This coffeepot was made by Joseph and Nathaniel Richardson who were brothers and silversmiths in Philadelphia. The Richardson family had been in the business for at least a couple of generations. They crafted this pot in Philadelphia circa 1785-1790. It weighs 40 Oz. 9 Dwt. The initials A M are for Ann Morgan (nee Walsh). She married Thomas Morgan in Philly about 1785. Her father had been a wealthy merchant with his own fleet of  ships who signed the non-importation resolutions of 1765 and left a bequest to support a free negro school when he died in 1782. Joseph Richardson would go on to be the first assayer appointed by George Washington at the new United States Mint in Philadelphia.
